RESUMO

The present study was undertaken to assess the knowledge and practices regarding menstruation and menstrual hygiene among the navodaya school girls of Telangana. Using a descriptive analytical survey design and multistage sampling, the knowledge and practices on menstrual hygiene among 10 navodaya school girls 100 were identified. Among the respondents, 35% had poor knowledge, 77% had poor practice. About 49% had menstrual pattern disorders. 33% reported symptoms of urinary tract infection. Back pains (43%) were the predominant physical problems and anger (39%) was the major emotional problems. Statistically significant correlation existed between knowledge and practice. Statistically significant difference was observed in the knowledge scores on menstruation with respect to the educational level of the respondents education of their mother and monthly family income The practice of menstrual hygiene was significantly associated with age of the student and their standard of living index. The study concludes to mandate health education in schools by professional nurses, on menstruation and its hygienic management; community education on the scientific aspects of menstruation; and policy implementation towards the construction of girl friendly toilets in houses, schools and public places so that the nation becomes healthy and productive with empowered wo

RESUMO

The quality of school education to a large depends on the quality of teachers. Teacher education is considered as an integral part of educational system and improvement in the quality of education. An Internship is an integrated component of practice teaching at advance level of teachers education programme. There are certain objectives of Internship programme for behavior modification of student teachers with special reference to develop teaching competency and positive attitude towards teaching profession. The research studies, the reflection of student teacher on the Internship programme with the lane of their actual attitude, aptitude with this programme and carried out with conclusion of Students' allover reflection/ opinion of the Internship programme. It can infer the present scenario of internship programme and its positive / negative reflections of students-teachers.

RESUMO

Aim: Obesity and family history of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus are the major risk factors for the development of type 2 Diabetes mellitus in youth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between serum ferritin and insulin resistance in healthy young obese with and without family history of type 2 Diabetes mellitus. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biochemistry, Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Kambipura, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, for eight months period in the year 2012. Material and Methods: A small group study was undertaken in 90 students who were in the age group of 17-22 years. The study population was divided into two groups based on body mass index, Group I /non-obese group (n=46) and Group II/ overweight & obese group (n=44). Fasting and postprandial blood glucose, Serum ferritin, serum insulin and lipid parameters were estimated and Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated for all the ninety students. Results: Statistically significant differences in Total cholesterol (p=0.05), Triglycerides (p=0.05), serum insulin (p<0.01) and HOMA (p<0.01) were observed between the two groups. Mean serum ferritin values were increased in group II (overweight/obese) but not statistically significant. Serum insulin and serum ferritin showed a significant correlation with BMI for the whole study group. Serum ferritin and insulin levels significantly correlated with waist to hip ratio in students with family history of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus as against individuals without family history. 59% of the obese students with family history of Diabetes mellitus had insulin resistance. Conclusion: Our study has shown that a significant proportion of obese students with family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus had insulin resistance and elevated levels of ferritin, highlighting the importance of early screening for obesity associated co morbidities like metabolic syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases in these individuals

RESUMO

Fungal cell wall degrading chitinases and glucanases attained significance in agriculture, medicine, and environment management. The present study was conducted to describe the optimum conditions required for the production of beta-1,4-N-acetyl glucosaminidase (NAGase) and beta-1,3-glucanase by a biocontrol strain of Bacillus subtilis AF 1. B. subtilis AF 1 was grown in minimal medium with colloidal chitin (3.0%) and yeast extract (0.3% YE ) and incubated at pH 7.0 and 30 degrees C on constant shaker at 180 rpm for 6 days produced highest amounts of NAGase. Presence of 0.5 mM of phenyl methyl sulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) and 0.04% of Tween 20 further improved the enzyme production. B. subtilis AF 1 grown in minimal medium with laminarin (1%) and yeast extract (0.3%) for 3 days produced maximum amount of beta-1,3-glucanase. These conditions can be further scaled-up for large-scale production of NAGase and beta-1,3-glucanase by B. subtilis AF 1.
